I hope you enjoyed this Tip and interview and found them useful. Most importantly, I want you to put the Tip into action!
Every day of the Summit, I’m awarding a prize for the Best Comment. So, leave a comment to share what action you’ve taken or are going to take, or your biggest “aha” and how the Tip or interview is making you think differently.
And remember, you can get input from me here when you comment or ask a question. So go ahead and share what you are thinking and doing with this Tip!
This was an excellent presentation. The “Aha” moment for me was the description of preventative vs promotion questions. I plan to watch this presentation again to review the pointers on how to better respond to preventative questions. Thank you
A constant struggle for me is not knowing how to effectively deal with others’ perceptions of me, and either letting it ride, or being defensive. Laura has demystified this notion, and allowed me to see that power lies in our hands. AHA moment: “when you see how others see you, you’re able to rewrite the narrative and not allow them to write the narrative of who you are”. The interview has left me newly inspired and empowered to take charge of my biggest challenges. I could have listened to her more! I look forward to seeking out her book, and practicing to “flip the stereotype in my favour”.
Thank you so much, Laura, your session has been very enlightening.
Excellent tip! Laura’s example with curiosity reminds me of the Chip Conley keynote last year in which he shared that younger professionals have curiosity and are accumulating wisdom, and older professionals have accumulated wisdom and now must strive to remain curious. I LOVE how Laura addressed this potential perception during an interview process and will employ the technique (as well as, put thought to possible additional perceptions). Another gem from Career Mastery KickStart!
An excellent presentation and discussion! My default position when dealing with someone’s (mis)perceptions is to be defensive; I aim to change it to one of being curious about what that person might be ‘seeing’ and speak to that. An added and perhaps unintended consequence, is that I will be more aware of my own perceptions of others, and try to reframe my questions to and conversation with them.
Thanks very much Laura and May. Best wishes!
