I appreciate the example of learning for learning’s sake. I find myself doing that frequently. I’ve started to target my learning to help clients. This also feeds another strength I’ve found–sharing knowledge (I don’t want to say “teaching”). Thanks for the practical tip, Michael!

This was just a mind blowing session James Brook and i had many key take aways. Though we have heard of identifying strengths, and be conscious about our own blind spots, what stuck me profoundly is the actual meaning of Optimizing strengths. As i was brooding over the dramatic changes that is continuing to happen in my life including a career transition to a different country, altogether different culture, and shifting of family, and the intertwined uncertainty,..May just asked the question as if it was for me!! Thank you May! All through this month, as i was getting introduced to the new team, my boss kept mentioning about the unique skill set and strengths that i am bringing into the team.
This is the time when i needed to hear this – which is not to get over enthusiastic about my strengths and overplay it to a point where it becomes a hindrance to career advancement. Also tips such as being receptive to feedback, taking purposeful feedback, and associating with people who are different and who disagree with you so that you are consciously able to keep a check on your strengths,..are such valuable tips for anyone at any level in their career. I also reflected on my strengths that potentially went overdose in my previous work place and how i can optimize it now. For example, in my workplace as everyone knew me in depth, i would in general remain as a silent observer and would give my inputs almost when everyone finishes their turn. But i will have to optimize this and not remain too silent in the new workplace as i am in the process of establishing my credential as well.

Thank you, James and May! This reminded me of a Positive Psychology course I took which breaks your strengths into your realized strengths, unrealized strengths, and learned behaviours (which may be similar to overplayed strengths). I thought of unrealized strengths with this point James made at the end: Put your strengths to work – work them out everyday even though it’s tough but incredibly rewarding.
That’s the sweet spot where I think we find our life purpose by tapping into those unrealized strengths.
