Future-of-work strategist Heather E. McGowan helps leaders prepare their people and organizations for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The Third Industrial Revolution was marked by computerization and automation of physical labor, laying the foundation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which will be notable for the rapid advancement of technology tools into the domain of human knowledge work. In this world, humans must continuously learn and adapt, and with this transition comes information overload.
Heather gives lucidity to the complex topic of the future of work through her illuminating graphic frameworks and powerful metaphors, all backed by deep research. In 2017, LinkedIn ranked her as its number one global voice for education. Pulitzer Prize–winning NYT columnist Thomas Friedman frequently quotes Heather in his books and columns and describes her as “the oasis” when it comes to insights into the future of work.
Heather’s sessions help employees and leaders alike prepare for and adapt to jobs that do not yet exist.
McGowan is the coauthor of The Adaptation Advantage: Let Go, Learn Fast, and Thrive in the Future of Work, published by Wiley in spring 2020.

Appreciate all speakers with CM Kickstart Virtual Summit including Heather McGowan who affirms it’s ok to fail when you try something new. Just get back up and kick start a new direction if need be based on passions and interests. Taking time out to listen to all of these micro sessions helps propel me forward and positive direction for the day and the week.
The idea of not being “locked in” to one and only one job/career/specialization is liberating and practical as our economy and world evolve. Thank you.
I agree, Jonathan! I’ve always felt that way, so it’s good to hear it from an expert.
I love Heather’s action item of writing down what you did and who you met with each day and circling the entries that most energized you to help you discover your passions. We hear/read advice all the time to “do what you’re passionate about.” But it’s not easy for everyone (i.e., me) to identify their passions. I know what I’m good at, but that’s not necessarily the same thing. And many others suggest ways to discover your passion (e.g., the flower petals exercise) that seem way too complicated and time-consuming. Heather’s suggestion is one I will actually do. Thanks!
This is my favorite session so far! Heather’s perspective about future planning is very practical and insightful for anyone, not just leaders.
what a strong idea – will is stronger than skill. I was always thinking IT is taking over jobs and what to do to future proof my job. Now I got the aha moment that can now increase my WILL and follow this suggestion to get myself ready for the future, thank you so much for such a great tip.
Leave out your fears of not feel confortable on do something, if you want to keep growing, learn constantly and be curios. It will be a huge regret if you want to do something and you limit yourself just by fear of failing #CMK2021
Heather McGowan’s words really spoke to me in so many ways. I shared what I gained from today’s session with several of my coworkers already. I loved “will over skill,” and the fact that adapting to our ever changing workplace is so important. It was also encouraging to hear her say to follow your passions and find what gives you energy. I could go on about what I loved about this presentation! #CMK2021
This really inspired me. Loved the focus on adaptability and how the change in technology is going to make the human centered skills more and more important in the workplace – and great news for those of us who are further on in their career, as those skills deepen with time. My personal experience also echoes that culture and environment that supports psychological safety are fundamental for both individual and organisational growth.
Please share the assessment tools that Heather mentioned. I have tried to rewind but can’t seem to get what she said.
